Getting Paid for Online Work: UPI, Bank Transfers, PayPal and Tax Basics

LootBeezShop team · 6 November 2026 · 8 min read · All articles

Earning online is only half the job — the other half is getting paid safely, on time and with proper records. This guide explains common payment methods for remote work, how to keep track of your income and basic tax points. It is general information, not tax or legal advice; for your own situation, speak to a qualified accountant.

Common ways remote workers are paid

Domestic bank transfer

Many employers and platforms pay directly into your bank account. You share your account holder name, account number and branch code (such as the IFSC in India). This information can receive money but cannot be used to withdraw it.

UPI (India)

UPI lets platforms send money instantly to your UPI ID. It is fast and free for you. You only ever share your UPI ID; you never need to enter your UPI PIN to receive money. If anyone asks you to enter a PIN to "receive a payment", it is a scam.

International payment services

Freelancers working with clients abroad often use services such as PayPal, Payoneer or Wise, or direct international bank transfers. Compare fees and exchange rates — they can make a noticeable difference to what you receive.

Platform wallets

Some marketplaces hold your earnings in an in-app balance until you withdraw. Check minimum withdrawal amounts, processing times and fees before you start.

What a trustworthy payer does

  • Explains how pay is calculated before you start work.
  • Shows a clear history of what you earned and why.
  • Pays to an account in your own name.
  • Gives a transaction reference (for example a UTR number) for every payout.
  • Never asks for joining fees, OTPs or PINs.

Keep simple records

Create a spreadsheet with the date, client or platform, work done, amount, payment method and transaction reference. Save invoices and payout emails in one folder. Good records help you plan, resolve disputes and file taxes correctly.

Tax basics to understand

  • Online income is usually taxable. Most countries treat freelance or task-based income as taxable income, even if each payment is small.
  • Tax may be deducted at source. In some countries, payers deduct a percentage before paying you and report it to the tax authority. In India this is called TDS, and payers may ask for your PAN to apply the correct rate.
  • You may be able to claim deductions for genuine work expenses such as internet, equipment or software, depending on your country's rules.
  • Foreign income has extra rules. If clients pay you from abroad, ask an accountant about reporting and any registration requirements.
  • File your return even if tax was deducted. Filing can help you claim refunds of excess tax and builds a financial record.

Avoid payment scams

  • Never forward money you received to someone else.
  • Be wary of "overpayments" followed by requests to send back the difference.
  • Do not accept cheques from unknown clients abroad.
  • Use only payment links from the platform you actually work with.
